What to do in Riga – conclusion of the season

As the conclusion of  summer is approaching, make sure to get the most out of your vacation. We have gathered a list of attractions, activities and sightseeing options in case you’re not really sure about what to do in Riga.

Even though this guide on what to do in Riga is focused mostly on daily activities, you still might want to attend some of the festivals we have reviewed in our previous blog post.

You can read more about festivals and things to do in Riga here.

The key is to start the day right

While the weather is treating us well, first thing on your “what to do in Riga” list should be to enjoy a cup of specialty coffee together with a nice dessert, on a terrace in one of so many restaurants and cafes in Riga Old Town. While you’re enjoying the view and getting accustomed to the character of this vibrant city you’ll probably begin to realise that you don’t need to have a definite plan for what to do in Riga, because once you’re in the city everything is just within a walking distance.

What to see in Riga

Most visitors already know what to do in Riga when they arrive, but it is often that they have not seen the other side of this colorful city, the Riga Central Market a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998, and probably one of the largest and most visited markets in Eastern Europe.
Here you can find the freshest locally produced goods and such products that you might not find elsewhere.

Architecture and scenery

If you feel like staying outdoors then there are lots of things to do in Riga. You can start by taking a walk through some of Riga’s very green and well-kept parks, such as Bastejkalns Park which is also right besides the Freedom Monument, yet another wonderful piece of art and a story to tell.

In very close proximity to Freedom Monument you will also find such cultural and architectural treasures as: Latvian National Opera and Ballet –  Neoclassical theatre from 1863. And moving closer to the area which is most concentrated with Art Nouveau architecture you will find the very recently refurbished Latvian National Museum of Art

In conclusion of the evening take a stroll down the streets of Riga city centre and be amazed by the Art Nouveau architecture, in fact, Riga is home for the largest collection of Art Nouveau architecture in the world. Even those who don’t know what to do in Riga by the end of their visit definitely have seen a great deal of this, one of a kind, collection.

Peace and fresh air

If the previous suggestions for what to do in Riga were not tempting enough then you definitely won’t go wrong by catching a suburban train from the Riga Central Train station to the well known seaside resort of Jurmala. There you will find plenty of restaurants, some souvenir shopping, beautiful views and, most of all, probably the greatest beach in Latvia.

Once you have decided on what to do in Riga, another important success factor of your vacation is where to stay in Riga. Riga LUX Apartments offer unique, fully serviced apartments conveniently located in Riga city center.

Whether you have everything planned or you don’t know what to do in Riga yet, be assured there will always be something to excite you in this magnificent city.
